xG and xGI

xG, expected goals, measures the quality of the chances a player has had: how many goals an average player would have scored from exactly those shots. xGI, expected goal involvements, adds expected assists on top, so it captures a player's total attacking output whether or not the finishes went in.

Why the underlying numbers matter

Goals are rare and lumpy, so a handful of matches tells you very little about whether a player is genuinely creating danger. Chance quality accumulates faster than goals do, which makes xGI a steadier read on a player's role in his team than his points column over the same period.

Fantasy Premier League publishes expected goals, expected assists and expected goal involvements per player in the official data, so this is not a private metric any more: it sits next to price, form and ownership.

How to read a gap

A player scoring far above his xG is finishing well or getting lucky, and the two are hard to separate in a small sample. A player far below it is getting into the right positions and missing, which historically corrects. Neither is a rule, and elite finishers do beat their xG over long periods, but a wide gap is a reason to check the fixtures and the minutes rather than to buy or sell on instinct.

Example

Two forwards have each scored 6 goals. One did it from 7.9 xG, the other from 3.1 xG. The first is producing chances at a rate he can repeat, the second has been finishing above his chances and is the riskier hold.

The gap can be large over a full season: in a recent completed Fantasy Premier League season the biggest overperformer finished 9.93 goals and assists above his xGI. Figures as of 3 September 2026.

Method

Biggest over- and underperformers against expected goal involvement (xGI). The official FPL API publishes expected stats from the 2022-23 season, and end of season totals from the official player data are used for each season. The difference shown is actual goals plus assists minus xGI, measured in goal plus assist units, not FPL points. Only players with at least 900 minutes in the season are included. Historical seasons are built from the community FPL archive maintained by vaastav (MIT licensed, itself derived from the official FPL API) combined with our own calculations.

These are official Fantasy Premier League figures from the game's own API, covering every registered manager rather than a sample of them, so there is no selection bias to correct for. Seasons before the current one are rebuilt from the community FPL archive maintained by vaastav, which is MIT licensed and itself derived from the same official API.
