Triple Captain

Triple Captain is a Fantasy Premier League chip that makes your captain score three times his points for one gameweek instead of the usual double. It is activated before the deadline and applies only to that gameweek.

What the chip is actually worth

Your captain already doubles, so the chip adds exactly one extra copy of his score. A captain who returns 14 points is worth 28 normally and 42 with the chip, a gain of 14. That framing keeps expectations honest: the chip is worth one good captain performance, not three.

If the captain does not play, the armband and the chip both pass to the vice-captain, so a triple captain on a rested player is not wasted outright, but it is rarely what you planned.

When it is played

The standard plan is a premium forward or midfielder in a double gameweek, ideally with two home fixtures against weak defences. The alternative is a single gameweek with an unmissable fixture, played early rather than held for a double that never materialises.

Example

You triple captain a striker in a double gameweek. He scores 9 points in the first match and 13 in the second, so his 22 points are credited as 66 and the chip alone has earned you 22 over a normal captaincy.

From the archive

Managers played the Triple Captain 2,741,695 times over the 2025/26 season, more often than any other chip. Figures as of 24 May 2026.

Method

Behaviour is computed from each manager's official FPL gameweek history (transfers, points hits, bench points, chips and team value). Picks data is never used. Figures cover managers whose gameweek history runs from the opening gameweek to the final gameweek of the season, so managers who joined after the season started, and managers who stopped early, are excluded. Transfer counts include moves made on wildcard and free hit gameweeks, which cost no points. A hit means a gameweek with a positive transfer cost. Team value is the squad value including bank at gameweek 38, in millions. Percentiles use the nearest-rank method and medians the classic midpoint method. Managers with missing or corrupt data are excluded. The sample skews toward managers in active mini-leagues.

Managers who played the whole 2025/26 season in FPL Butler's season archive, meaning their gameweek history runs from the opening gameweek to the final one, so managers who joined late or stopped early are excluded. Managers enter the archive because they play in crawled mini-leagues or national country leagues. The crawler prioritises leagues that look active, so this sample is more engaged than the full global player base and behaviour rates should be read with that skew in mind.
