The FPL template through history
Every season the field converges on the same few names. The Butler has kept a note of which ones, and of just how crowded it got.
The most owned player in a single Fantasy Premier League season, across the seasons from 2016/17 to 2025/26, is Haaland in 2022/23, held by 9,582,624 managers at his peak, or 83.7% of everyone registered that season. In the season now being played, 2026/27, Haaland is the most owned player at 70.9%.

The most owned player of every season
Ownership in Fantasy Premier League is published as a count of managers, not a share, so the table gives both: how many managers held the season's most owned player when his ownership peaked, and what that was as a share of everyone registered that season.
The share is a floor rather than a ceiling. A peak is reached somewhere during the season, while the manager total is measured at the end of it, when it is at its highest, so the true share on the day was a little higher than the table says.
- Haaland set the record in 2022/23, peaking in gameweek 26.
- In 2025/26 the most owned player was Haaland, at 72.6% of registered managers.
- The pattern is one name at a time: in every season FPL has published a manager total for, a single player is held by more managers than are left without him.
| Season | Player | Managers at peak | Peak gameweek | Share of managers |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2025/26 | Haaland | 9,515,178 | 22 | 72.6% |

The template right now
The season 2026/27 is still being played, so these figures move week to week. They are the official ownership shares as of 3 September 2026, and they are the closest thing there is to a live picture of the template.
Haaland leads on 70.9%, ahead of João Pedro on 69.8% and B.Fernandes on 48.6%. A player above forty percent is being bought partly because missing him is dangerous, which is what makes the template self-reinforcing.

Questions and answers
Who is the most owned player in FPL history?
Haaland in 2022/23, held by 9,582,624 managers at his peak in gameweek 26, or 83.7% of every manager registered that season. Measured as a share rather than a count, the record is Haaland in 2023/24 at 84.7%.
Who is the most owned FPL player right now?
Haaland, in 70.9% of squads in 2026/27 as of 3 September 2026. João Pedro is second on 69.8% and B.Fernandes third on 48.6%.
What is the FPL template?
The template is the group of most owned players that a large share of managers hold at the same time. It is not a fixed list: it re-forms every season around whoever the field has converged on, and in every season FPL has published a manager total for, at least one player was held by more managers than were without him.
How is FPL ownership measured?
Fantasy Premier League publishes ownership as a count of managers holding a player, updated every gameweek. Turning it into a percentage needs the registered manager total for the same season, which FPL publishes separately, and which is why the shares here start from 2019/20.
